Maru Smith Opabola is a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Her research explores the intersection of race, the First Amendment, and media law, highlighting both the strengths and vulnerabilities of the First Amendment in the context of freedom of the press. Her current scholarship focuses on the impact of media deregulation on the racial diversity of media ownership. Specifically, she examines the effects of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 on media consolidation and conglomeration, and its consequences for racial minorities in terms of access to ownership and representation. Her work aims to foster improvement at this crucial juncture of artificial intelligence development.
