This course examines jurisprudence as the study of the nature and purpose of legal order. Students engage with major legal traditions including legal positivism, natural law, legal realism, and interpretivism, which shape today’s debates. They analyze the connection between law and morality through key theorists and landmark court decisions.

The seminar sparks intellectual curiosity about legal foundations. Lawyers often invoke concepts like rights, authority, equality, obligation, and justice. Jurisprudence asks what these concepts mean and why they matter. This inquiry deepens students’ understanding of law as a living institution where societies express, challenge, and refine their core political and moral values.
