Land Use Law

Land Use Law for Nonlawyers introduces students to state and local government regulation of land use and real property development. The course covers the history of land use regulation in the United States, common state-level frameworks for land use regulation, differences between planning and land use regulation, common local government land use decisions, and common fees local governments charge real estate developers. Throughout the course, students will read state and federal court decisions to understand the bases for government authority to regulate land use and the limits on state and local government power to regulate land use. This course is appropriate for students.
