Law and Policy in the Americas
The Law & Policy in the Americas Program is sponsored by the University of Florida’s Center for Governmental Responsibility at the Levin College of Law, the Center for International Economic & Business Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies and the International Center. The Program coordinates the activities of these centers as they relate to law, policy, and relations in the Americas. The Program leverages the university’s legal expertise to promote the rule of law across the Americas, while enhancing the university’s strategic partnerships and collaborations within the region. One program initiative is the iBR/CGR Collaboration, described below.
Initiative on Brazilian Legal Studies (iBR) : A CGR Collaboration
Brazil’s legal system is notably complex, reflecting the nation’s diverse cultural, social, and economic realities. A thorough understanding of this system is essential for grasping Brazilian law; however, accessing comprehensive and up-to-date information on the subject remains a challenge. The iBR initiative bridges this knowledge gap by establishing a means for American legal scholars and students to engage with Brazilian law through shared experiences, expertise, and innovative ideas.
In keeping with CGR’s tradition of fostering an environment that promotes learning and collaboration, we are starting a new project: the “iBR – Initiative on Brazilian Legal Studies”.
iBR is for legal professionals, researchers, and students seeking in-depth analysis of Brazil’s evolving legal landscape. Our mission is to provide a space for discussion, analysis, and dissemination of legal topics, fostering a deeper understanding of domestic and international Brazilian law. Here, you will find information on opportunities to engage with experts, attend academic discussions, and participate in forums. iBR will also post articles/news about significant legislative changes, judicial decisions, and emerging legal trends in Brazil. Whether you are exploring research opportunities or information about current legal debates, iBR is your source for information on Brazilian legal issues.

Objectives
iBR will focus on three main objectives:
- Produce or Gather Information: The initiative aims to create a comprehensive database of Brazilian legislation and legal issues. This will include summaries of laws, regulations, and court decisions, as well as reports on current legal issues in Brazil. This information will be gathered through rigorous research and analysis by our team of legal scholars.
- Share Information: The initiative will maintain a website where all the gathered information will be made available to the public. This will include reports, summaries, and analyses of Brazilian law. In addition to this, the initiative will present lectures in current courses at the Levin College of Law on an invitation basis from associated professors. Short courses on Brazilian law may also be offered for the academic community.
- Create Meaningful Connections and Networking: The initiative will organize events such as conferences and seminars to foster dialogue and exchange of ideas among students, professors, and legal professionals from Brazil and the USA. We also plan to facilitate exchange programs, visits, and trips between both countries for interested individuals or groups.
