UF Law Celebrates 110th Anniversary with New Culverhouse Challenge
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida Levin College of Law is pleased to announce its third annual Culverhouse Challenge in honor of the 110th anniversary of UF Law.
Hugh Culverhouse, from the UF Law Class of 1974, has committed to a 10:1 match of 1,000 donations of $110, for a total gift of $1.1 million to fund student scholarships.
“I remain committed to legal education,” said Culverhouse. “As Florida’s flagship law school, UF Law must continue to provide access to those who may not have the ability to afford a legal education. As alumni, we should rise together in support of future lawyers and leaders of our communities.”
UF Law Dean Laura A. Rosenbury says this challenge is designed to entice three special populations of UF Law alumni to participate.
“We will focus on reaching alumni who work in government and public interest sectors, alumni who have never given to UF Law, and alumni who have graduated within the last 15 years,” said Dean Rosenbury. “But, of course, all alumni and friends are encouraged to support our students and celebrate the anniversary of the law school through a gift.”
In addition to his own generous gifts, Culverhouse has spurred several fundraising challenges at UF Law, generating millions of dollars in new student scholarship support.
In 2017, Culverhouse initiated a challenge to the UF Law community to raise $1.5 million to match his $1.5 million commitment. His gift was then matched by the university, resulting in $4.5 million in new scholarship support. In 2018, Culverhouse joined with UF Board of Trustees Chairman Mori Hosseini, who each committed $500,000 to match $1 million in donations from alumni and friends. Once again the university matched their gifts, resulting in $3 million in new scholarship support.
“This new commitment to UF Law is an excellent way to acknowledge the incredible legacy of leadership built over the last 110 years,” said UF President Kent Fuchs. “We thank Mr. Culverhouse for his generous support of our students and we look forward to seeing how these funds – and those raised as a result of the challenge – will have a positive impact on future students.”
“We are so grateful for Hugh’s continued support of legal education and UF Law,” said Dean Rosenbury. “Another infusion of support from the Culverhouse Challenge will fuel UF Law’s continued rise.”
The University of Florida now ranks 7th among all public universities. The Levin College of Law ranks 12th among public law schools and 31st among all law schools. A robust public-private partnership remains a top priority for the entire university community.
