AI & Legal Technology Lab
The AI & Legal Technology Lab, led by Professor Thinh Nguyen at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, offers a practice-centered immersion in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications for legal practice and scholarship. Students engage with the conceptual foundations and technical apparatus of data science while translating theory into practice through co-developing applications with instructors, law faculty, administrators, and legal organizations. The course covers Python fundamentals, essential libraries, machine learning techniques, deep learning frameworks, transformer architectures, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, and reinforcement learning, and their applications to legal practice and research. Emphasis is placed on governance, ethics, fairness, privacy, and user experience as critical determinants of successful AI deployment in legal contexts. By the end of the course, students gain methodological fluency, practical judgment, and experiential foundation to lead innovation at the intersection of law and AI. Example student projects include: working with a UF Law professor to build a chatbot capable of analyzing the history of changes to the Florida Constitution, automating research into non-profit board compositions using public sources, building an app to assist students with landlord / tenant disputes, Bluebook and citation-checking apps, and building predictive algorithms for facilitating negotiation and settlement discussions in mediation.
