Professor Calfee retires after 50 years of teaching and service
More than 350 alumni, students, faculty, friends, and family gathered on Friday, November 14, to celebrate Professor Dennis Calfee’s 50 years of teaching and service at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. The celebration took place in Gainesville at the Champions Club at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, bringing together generations of Gators whose lives and careers have been shaped by Professor Calfee’s remarkable influence.
The evening was emceed by The Honorable Robert Luck (JD 04), U.S. Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the Honorable Kathryn Kimball Mizelle (JD 12), District Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
“Judge Mizelle and I have the unenviable task of emceeing this evening’s event,” Judge Luck said to the crowd. “Collectively, we’re going to try in the short time we have together to capture and reflect Professor Calfee’s incredible legacy over the course of a couple of hours.”
“Of course, there’s been much to-do – and rightly so – about his academic contributions and his tenure teaching,” said Judge Mizelle. “But we also are going to share more than that. Because Professor Calfee has been far more of an influence on a deeper, more personal level. He really has become family to so many of us here this evening.”
Other speakers included current and emeritus faculty and leaders who reflected on Professor Calfee’s extraordinary contributions to UF Law and the tax community: Emeritus Dean Robert Jerry, Emeritus Professor Mike Friel, Professor Lee-ford Tritt, and Professor Yariv Brauner.
Several alumni also shared personal tributes throughout the evening, including Andrew Comiter (JD 08, LLMT 09), Matthew Comiter (LLMT 12), Richie Comiter (JD 80, LLMT 81), Lauren Detzel (JD 77), Laura Ann Fouraker-Gardner (JD 95, LLMIT 06), John Gregory (JD 01), Trace Jackson (JD 16), Cristin Keane (JD 97, LLMT 98), Jonathan Mann (JD 12), Jon Philipson (JD 11), and Dabney Ware (JD 96).
During the program, Richie Comiter announced that alumni had successfully rallied to complete the fundraising needed to fully endow the Dennis A. Calfee Eminent Scholar Chair, ensuring Professor Calfee’s legacy continues for generations.
Current student and Editor-in-Chief of the Florida Law Review Stephanie Miller also shared that the Florida Law Review will dedicate its upcoming spring issue in Professor Calfee’s honor.
The evening concluded with a remarkable moment: Dean Merritt McAlister announced a $4 million anonymous pledge – an extraordinary commitment that will strengthen the Graduate Tax Program for years to come and support future generations of tax lawyers. The gift will also unlock a matching contribution from UF Law alum and UF Board of Trustees member Richard Cole (JD 74) as part of the new Cole Legacy Challenge.
