A Tribute to Justice: Remembering Judge Hatchett
The Nelson Initiative on Ethics and Leadership is hosting a tribute to the late Judge Joseph Woodrow Hatchett, the first Black Justice on the Florida Supreme Court, the first Black man to win a state-wide election in Florida, and the first Black man appointed to a federal appeals court in the Deep South, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Former Senator Bill Nelson, now Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will introduce Judge Rosemary Barkett of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, Professor Kenneth Nunn, Dr. Patricia Hilliard-Nunn Memorial Racial Justice Term Professor and Professor of Law, and Professor Danaya Wright, T. Terrell Sessums and Gerald Sohn Professor in Constitutional Law and Professor of Law who will discuss Judge Hatchett’s many accomplishments. Excerpts from a 2017 presentation by Judges Hatchett and Barkett will be presented by Dr. James Cusick, Curator of the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Governmental Responsibility at the Levin College of Law, the George A. Smathers Libraries, and the African American Studies Program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida.
